I MUST BE SLIPPING
or I’ve been duped. For some reason there was a stat floating around in my head that 50% of all aids cases were black men. I was put on this course after one black man in responsded to the diatribe over the ESSENCE article.
Basically, a black woman started the blame game in response to the DL refuting by the Malebranche study, questioning where are black woman getting AIDS from…black men of course! (missing the point of IV drug use’s role), he responded where are black men getting it from…black women…the confusion led me to take a look at the increase in hetero-sexual contraction as reported in 2004 vs. cummulative, and what do you know, hetero contraction is up as well. Again I always preface this reporting with the question “what is the incubation period of this disease”, to remind our new listeners, anywhere from 7 to 15 years, so we are talking about behaviors from the early and mid 90’s…anyway from a quick look, it seems that black men are about 1/3 of of entire reporting as well as reporting for 2004, bad but not as bad as I perceived. Like April Simms says “turn off that idiot box”

In a later post I will explain the whole hyperbole and lumping in of categories the media does to fuel the flames of finger pointing, to keep us suspicious of each other, so they can continue to sell newspapers…by the numbers the headlines you will never see.

Actually, I only use data provided by the CDC and report it back just to put a little perspective on how disconnected some of our perceptions are from reality…As Ms. Melee put it so eloquently before her diatribe “The Truth Hurts”…from the CDC How Black Women are contracting AIDS.
the 50% is rounded to nearest percent and is a reflection of the 36% of cases from IV drug use plus High risk sex with a known IV drug user. OBTW I’m extending another causual fallacy as well, but allow you to assume the 2% bi-sexual contraction rate was from Black Men exclusively.

according to 2003 US Census, 67.29% of Black Men pay thier court ordered child support. Here’s an interesting piece of trivia, In the US there 95,000 Black Men who have court ordered child support. Two questions(and you know how big I am on asking the right question)…First what percent of black women pay their court ordered child support? And more importantly, with the number of horror stories I’ve heard about black men and the child services system and the unbelievably high the deliquency rate (60% - 57,000 did not receive payment of the 95,000 with court orders) among black women, how come I’ve never heard 1 story about a black woman, being incarcerated for back child support?

SO I MADE A SILLY BET
This weekend (and it wasn’t on the fight)…I was talking with one of my more informed friends and the crisis of young black males dropping out of high school at a rate of 50% got dropped like bombshell. And in my typical way I called BS, unfortunately I had a tough time correlating the graduation rates with dropout rates, so woke up this morning doing a little homework. And I’m really calling BS. Look at the following and somebody please find for me a 50% dropout rate. More importantly, again, see how closely data with black boys parallels that of black girls. So I guess Black Girls are dropping out at 50% as well? I got one dollar for the first person who shows me substantatively backed with data that black boys are dropping out of high school at this mythical 50% rate (CLICK SHEET BELOW TO ENLARGE)
I know I’ve already highlighted the below chart, but the first question I asked of the Census when this was sent to me was “Why are you including 15 year olds in the graduation rates you are reporting?”, I know of very few 15 year olds getting their diplomas, in fact with the high rate at which Black Boys are repeating HS grades, the median age of graduation has got to be closer to 18 if not 19…”thats just how we report for all ethnicities. opening up another blow hole for special interest organizations to further exploit the “crisis” of young black males further. The 78.9% for the movie is removing the 15-17 year old demographic, and if you look at 20+ demo, it’s even more positive. But you’ll never hear that Black Men are at all time records when it relates to HS graduation.
