Georgia Southern Hosts National Conference
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) –  – Georgia Southern University is making sure to provide the youth of today the tools necessary for a brighter future.

The university rented out the Hyatt Regency in downtown Savannah for the National Youth at Risk Conference. It’s also the largest conference the college of education sponsors.

People with careers and interests in serving youth took part in workshops, seminars and continuing education programs.

The conference addressed students’ academic achievement, social and emotional skills, safety and violence prevention, mental and physical health and family and community.

One administrator says she learned a lot from the conference. Administrator Olethia Thomas cited “seeing the kids as what they could be and not what they’re labeled as. It’s something I already knew, but it’s good to hear someone else preach about it. Sometimes we get in a grind and we’re seeing who we’re working with and not seeing that this could be the future leader of a country or a great writer.”

Over 1,400 participants were involved in this conference. Four high-flying schools were honored for outstanding success in academic achievement. The conference wraps up tomorrow.

At 6:30pm tonight, Janks Morton’s controversial film What Black Men Think will be shown. It’s free and open to the public.
