Will Smith Producing ‘Karate Kid’ Remake for Son
The long-rumored project is moving forward with a 2009 shoot date, according to Variety. Will Smith will produced the Columbia Pictures release through his Overbrook banner.
Chris Murphy will write the remake, which will take plot elements from the original film, while transplanting the action to more exotic locations, including Beijing.
Jaden Smith will play a bullied kid who turns to an inscrutable mentor to learn the joys and pleasures of waxing on and waxing off. Wait. That sounds dirty, doesn’t it? Hmmm…
Directed by John Avildsen, the 1984 film starred Ralph Macchio as young Daniel Larusso. Pat Morita picked up an Oscar nomination for his performance as Mr. Miyagi. William Zabka didn’t pick up an Oscar nomination for his performance as the evil Johnny.
Jerry Weintraub, who also produced the original, will produce the remake.
Jaden Smith had his first acting break opposite his father in “The Pursuit of Happyness.” He’ll appear opposite Keanu Reeves in this winter’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
